Although the original poster (below) shows the venue as the "new VCU Gym", an article in VCU's student newspaper indicates the gig was shifted off-campus to the larger "Mosque" venue a few days prior to the event in order to meet strong ticket demand. The above-mentioned setlist represents Springsteen's complete 45-minute performance as the evening's undercard. A recently circulating, but poor quality, audience tape includes the entire Springsteen show. The subtle tape edit heard after "Thundercrack" (the end of the main set) and before "Rosalita" (the encore) merely eliminates several minutes of cheering as the audience coaxes Bruce and the band back for a final song. Following "Rosalita" the MC can clearly be heard announcing that Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks will follow. From a historical standpoint the significant performance here is "Rosalita". It's both the earliest known live performance and the only circulating rendition by the pre-David Sancious lineup of the band. Although marred by weak sound quality, this is a funny, unique arrangement. Not only does it feature a near-complete rendition of THE BEACH BOYS "Fun Fun Fun" sandwiched in the middle, but it also incorporates a cosmic story-rap-fantasy that finds an 8yr-old Springsteen locked in an Alabama jail with Dennis Wilson, James Brown and Wilson Pickett.
